Mahi Near and Far
Report Date: June 23, 2014
Fishing out of Port Everglades always presents us with a decision each morning: Should we go north or south?
Since my last report, we spend a lot of time in deeper water between 600' to 1000' because that’s where we’ve been finding the mahi – and they are everyone’s favorite this time of year. They are fun to catch, love to jump, they are beautiful and very good to eat.
On some recent trips we’ve had to release many of them because they were too small, but we’ve also seen some nice size fish in the 15 to 20 lb. range. At times we’ve had some big schools around the boat and our customers simply enjoyed looking at them.
We are also finding fish nearer to shore – recently found a big school of mahi in 200'. We also fished some deep wrecks in 200' and caught some nice size amberjacks, barracuda and some big bonito. Lastly, we are still getting some nice size blackfin tuna, but mostly on late afternoon trips.
Every trip is different, but will try very hard to catch you some nice fish for dinner!
Good Luck & Tight Lines,
Capt. Mario Cote
